Resumen La biogeografía histórica de los principales biomas de selvas de América del Sur ha intrigado a los científicos durante mucho tiempo. Los eventos paleoclimáticos durante los últimos 130 mil años promovieron conexiones entre biomas de selvas en la región neotropical, lo que llevó a distribuciones disjuntas de parte de la biota. En este contexto, el murciélago de MacConnell, Mesophylla macconnelli, parece ser un ejemplo de especie restringida al bosque con su distribución actual atravesada por las áreas secas de América del Sur. En este estudio, inferimos las conexiones pasadas entre la Amazonía y el Bosque Atlántico utilizando modelos de nicho ecológico y el murciélago de MacConnell. Obtuvimos 681 registros de la especie, y estimamos su distribución potencial durante el Último Interglacial (LIG), Último Máximo Glacial (LGM) y períodos actuales. Nuestros modelos generados, basados en 260 registros de ocurrencia filtrados, tuvieron muy buen poder predictivo, con valores de adherencia AUC y TSS superiores a 0.9. La estacionalidad de la temperatura y la precipitación anual tuvieron la mayor contribución relativa. La distribución potencial en el LIG sugiere una conexión de área adecuada entre el suroeste del Bosque Atlántico y el sur del Cerrado y la Amazonía. La distribución potencial en el LGM sugiere una expansión del rango hacia el norte y el este de la Amazonía. Las distribuciones actuales y pasadas inferidas de Mesophylla macconnelli sugieren al menos dos períodos de conexión pasada entre la Amazonía y el Bosque Atlántico. Este patrón se encuentra en otros vertebrados asociados a los bosques en América del Sur, lo que sugiere que los ciclos climáticos del Pleistoceno fueron fundamentales para la generación de distribuciones disjuntas en la región.

Abstract The historical biogeography of the major South American forested biomes has long intrigued scientists. Paleoclimatic events during the last 130 thousand years promoted connections between forested biomes in the Neotropical region, leading to disjunct distributions of some of the biota. In this context, MacConnell’s Bat, Mesophylla macconnelli, appears to represent a forest-restricted species with its current distribution bisected by dry areas. In this study, we infer past connections between the Amazonia and Atlantic Forest using MacConnell’s Bat and ecological niche models. We obtained 681 records of the species, and estimated its potential distribution during the Last Interglacial (LIG), Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and current periods. Our generated models, based on 260 filtered occurrence records, had very good predictive power, with AUC and TSS adherence values above 0.9. Temperature seasonality and annual precipitation had the highest relative contribution. The potential distribution for the LIG suggested a suitable area connection between the southwestern Atlantic Forest and southern Cerrado and Amazonia. The potential distribution in the LGM suggests range expansion toward northern and eastern Amazonia. The current and inferred past distributions of Mesophylla macconnelli suggest at least two periods of past connection between Amazon and Atlantic Forest. This pattern is found in other forest-associated vertebrates in South America, suggesting that Pleistocene climatic cycles were central to the generation of disjunct distributions in the region.

Resumo A cuíca d’agua (Chironectes minimus) é um mamífero semiaquático pouco amostrado em áreas de Mata Atlântica do Brasil. Neste estudo apresentamos novos registros de C. minimus no estado de São Paulo, sudeste do Brasil, e comentamos sobre seu comportamento e ecologia. Nós instalamos nove armadilhas fotográficas em drenagens fluviais e passagens de gado sob uma rodovia, entre 2017 e 2019. De um total de 6.750 armadilhas-fotográficas-dia, obtivemos 16 registros de C. minimus (0,24 registros/100 armadilhas-fotográficas-dia) em duas armadilhas fotográficas instaladas em drenagens fluviais. A maioria dos registros foram feitos entre maio e agosto, na estação seca, e nas seis primeiras horas da noite. Os novos registros são de uma área altamente degradada que possui algumas matas ciliares. Os registros estão a aproximadamente 30 km da área protegida mais próxima onde a espécie já foi registrada. Nós sugerimos que C. minimus possui certa tolerância a hábitats degradados, contanto que os corpos d’agua e as matas ciliares estejam minimamente preservados. Os novos registros aqui apresentados também preenchem uma lacuna amostral no oeste de São Paulo.

Abstract The water opossum (Chironectes minimus) is a semi-aquatic mammal that is infrequently sampled in Atlantic rainforest areas in Brazil. Here we report on new records of C. minimus in the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, and comment on its behavior and ecology. We placed nine camera traps in culverts and cattle boxes under a highway, between 2017 and 2019. From a total of 6,750 camera-trap-days, we obtained 16 records of C. minimus (0.24 records/100 camera-trap-days) in two cameras placed in culverts over streams. Most of the records were made between May and August, in the dry season and in the first six hours after sunset. The new records are from a highly degraded area with some riparian forests. The records lie approximately 30 km away from the nearest protected area where the species is known to occur. We suggest that C. minimus has some tolerance to degraded habitats, as long as the water bodies and riparian forests are minimally preserved. The new records presented here also fill a distribution gap in western São Paulo state.

During day roosts surveys for bats in the Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, northern Colombia, we found occupied tents made of leaves of the palm species Sabal mauritiiformis and Cocos nucifera. We found Artibeus jamaicensis and Uroderma convexum using the tents, with groups of U. convexum ranging from 1 to 23 individuals, and a single occurrence for A. jamaicensis. A tent was simultaneously occupied by U. convexum and Thecadactylus rapicauda (Squamata). Although tent-roosting is known to be a widespread behavior for stenodermatine bats, these are the first observations of tent-roosting bats in northern Colombia and highlight a high potential for finding tent-using bats in the region.

Durante una búsqueda diurna de refugios de murciélagos en el Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, en el norte de Colombia, encontramos tiendas hechas de hojas de las palmeras Sabal mauritiiformis y Cocos nucifera. Encontramos a Artibeus jamaicensis y Uroderma convexum utilizando las tiendas, con grupos de U.convexum que variaban de 1 a 23 individuos y una sola ocurrencia de A. jamaicensis. Una tienda era ocupada simultáneamente por U. convexum y Thecadactylus rapicauda (Squamata). Aunque se sabe que el acampar en tiendas es un comportamiento generalizado para los murciélagos stenodermatine, estas son las primeras observaciones de murciélagos tienderos en el norte de Colombia y destacan un alto potencial para encontrar murciélagos que usan tiendas en la región.

RESUMO Os morcegos da subfamília Desmodontinae compreendem as únicas três espécies de mamíferos hematófagos. Entre elas, Diaemus youngii é a espécie com menor número de registros no Brasil, sendo pouco conhecida demográfica e ecologicamente. Nós relatamos o primeiro registro de D. youngii para o estado do Mato Grosso, no centro-oeste do Brasil, e fornecemos registros adicionais para os estados de Rondônia e Tocantins, no norte do Brasil. Os registros ampliam a distribuição conhecida de D. youngii no sul da região amazônica.

ABSTRACT Bats of the subfamily Desmodontinae are the only hematophagous mammals, represented by three species. Among them, Diaemus youngii has the fewest records in Brazil, being poorly known demographically and ecologically. We report the first record of D. youngii for Mato Grosso state, in central-western Brazil, and provide additional records for the states of Rondônia and Tocantins, in northern Brazil, extending the known distribution of D. youngii in the southern Amazon region.

O sauim amazônico Saguinus niger é um primata endêmico do Brasil, atualmente classificado como vulnerável na lista brasileira de espécies ameaçadas. Neste estudo, reportamos dois novos registros para uma área ecotonal entre Amazônia e Cerrado estendendo a distribuição da espécie ao sul para o estado de Mato Grosso. Adicionalmente, utilizamos modelagem de nicho ecológico (MNE) utilizando oito variáveis climáticas. O resultado da MNE sugere que a espécie está fortemente associada às áreas baixas onde temperaturas não variam significantemente ao longo das estações do ano. Sugerimos que os rios Araguaia, Tapirapé e Comandante Fontoura juntamente com a formação aberta do Cerrado e um clima mais sazonal podem ser barreiras de dispersão ao sul para espécie. Além disso, a inexistência de áreas protegidas ao sul da distribuição em combinação com intenso desflorestamento põe em dúvida a presença da espécie nesta região no longo prazo.

The western black tamarin, Saguinus niger, is an endemic Brazilian primate currently classified as Vulnerable by the Brazilian environmental authorities. In this paper, we report two new records from an Amazonia-Cerrado ecotone that extend the range of the species further south to the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. Additionally, we obtained an ecological niche model (ENM) for S. nigerusing eight climatic variables. The results of the ENM analysis suggest that the species is strongly associated with lowland areas where the temperature does not vary significantly among seasons. We also point out that the Araguaia, Tapirapé, and Comandante Fontoura rivers may act, along with open Cerrado formations and more seasonal climate, as southern barriers. The absence of protected areas in the southern part of its range, in combination with the intense deforestation that southeastern Amazonia faces, casts doubts on the continued presence of this and other forest-dependent species in the region.
